As a family member, caregiver, or friend, approaching someone about their road safety can be difficult. Our goal is to support older road users to be safe and independent for as long as possible. Your role is to be supportive, informative, and helpful in working together with an older person as they go through their transportation planning process. Starting early allows older road users to be active in the process and consider a variety of options that can allow them to remain driving and independent for as long as possible. It may take several strategies and approaches, multiple conversations, and a series of starts and stops to engage the older road user fully.
This guide will provide information to help you navigate road user safety with those you care about. It includes information, tips, tools, and resources to guide productive conversations and help as you assist someone with their transportation planning. You may also want to refer to our Conversation Starters in our Library to facilitate discussions.
