The Roadway Safety Foundation is thrilled to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2017 National Roadway Safety Awards! This biennial program is a joint effort by RSF and the Federal Highway Administration to recognize public agencies that have successfully implemented innovative, cost-effective, lifesaving road projects in their communities.

Here at RSF, this is one of our favorite programs, because it gives us an opportunity to recognize the unsung heroes of road safety. In cities and counties big and small across the country, and in all 50 States, DC, and U.S. territories, highway authorities are finding efficient uses for limited resources and implementing safety treatments that get road users to their destinations and back home to family and friends. With national fatality and injury statistics showing an alarming uptick in deaths and injuries on our roads, it is more important than ever that we identify where successes have been achieved, and amplify those stories so that proven projects can be replicated elsewhere.

While ChORUS and the Awards are separate programs of ours, they do have an important connection, and numerous past Award winners have been recognized specifically for their contributions to older road user safety. Our most recent Awards, for example, honored Florida's Safe Mobility for Life Coalition, and earlier ceremonies have recognized an innovative concept known as "senior zones," modeled on motorists' familiarity with school zones. We would love to receive some strong nominations this year from public agencies who are engaged in the kind of work that we feature here on ChORUS!

Applications are due June 9 and can be submitted at roadwaysafety.org/awards, which is also where you'll find everything you need to know about the program. Winners will be flown to Washington, DC for a ceremony and luncheon on Capitol Hill with elected leaders and national transportation officials, and will have their projects written up in a Noteworthy Practices Guide published by RSF and FHWA. We'll also provide local media support so that winners get the recognition they deserve back home, as well!

On behalf of the Awards team, thanks for all you do to keep us safe. We can't wait to read about your recent success stories!
